Thomas Kumah Nedjoh

Handmade: A Global Artisan Marketplace
"Im Thomas Kumah Nedjoh, from the Volta Region, and I did my training with master carver Mr. Kofi, who passed away in 2006. I did my apprenticeship with him in the 1980s and by 1986, I was working on my own. This afforded me the freedom to develop different techniques and styles.
"I work mainly with ofram wood, but I stock it for about a year before starting working on it. Ofram wood tends to change color in time, perfect for my designs and pieces, which I consider to be unique and attractive.
"My work is being recognized as original, and Ive received commissions from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints, as well as by other foreigners.
"What really inspires me to work is that anytime I see a carving, I feel happy and it motives me to work harder. The greatest challenge I have encountered is dealing with people who try to copy my work. But I realize that I am a competent carver and it is very difficult for others to replicate my work."
