My name is Raphael Commey and I was born in Accra in 1989. My friends describe me as having good judgment, working hard and being a good communicator.
When I was in elementary school, I first became interested in wood carving. I was very good at art and enjoyed the stories behind each piece, which inspired me.
After finishing junior high school, I wasn't able to continue my studies so I decided to venture into carving. I learned to finish a carved piece and became skilled at it. I studied with a teacher and have now taught two others. I mastered woodcarving and improved on my finishing skills.
Once, a friend told me I would never prosper. Now, I look back at those difficult times, think about how much better things are today, and laugh.
Starting on my own wasn't that difficult because I obtained most of my working materials during my apprenticeship. I had almost everything I needed by the time I set up my workshop.
My favorite part of the creative process is polishing the finished piece. When people purchase my works, this inspires me to create more and new designs. My hope is to have a happy family and become a well-known artist.
