“My name is Elizabeth Kumi, born to Madam Christiana Aboagye and Mr. Gilbert Kumi. My parents are disciplined people, and that was what I learned from them. I was born in the Greater Accra Region specifically East Legon, Shiashie. I have only one sibling; that is my brother in Shiashie. My parents live in Peki, in the Volta region. I went to school in Hohoe in the Volta region, and later moved to live with my brother, in order to help him run errands while he financed my education. I studied a secretarial course in secondary school and then diverted to a fashion school in Osu, Accra. All the while growing up, I sewed my clothes myself, so I had the flair for sewing.
“Right after secondary school, the love for sewing rekindled, and I had to polish it up at the fashion school. I learned clothing and drafting in fashion school. After a year at the fashion school, I graduated and started practicing. I started to sew for friends, family and myself at the house, until I acquired a shop. I have been able to employ two permanent staff who help me out. I draw my inspiration from nature and colors.
“I deal with both men’s and women’s apparel, in designs with long sleeves, short sleeves, caftans, long dresses and short dresses. I have a son who is in school and I aim to work hard for my son to soar higher in life. My goal for the future is to acquire an embroidery machine to do embroidery, and to employ more staff to help my community. I hope to have a wonderful time at NOVICA.”
