Jit Suttivong

Handmade: A Global Artisan Marketplace Chiang Mai, Thailand
"My name is Somjit Suttivong but friends call me Jit for short, which in Thai means 'mind' or 'soul.' I am in the third year of a Fine Arts degree, while my twin sister is studying Commercial Art. We both attend the same university. We have a younger brother, who is now in primary school. My father is a driver for a tourist company and my mother works in a shop. We all love and care for each other, and know we can count on each other. During the summer, my siblings and I work to help with the family's expenses, especially regarding the next school year.
"I see myself as a normal girl. I am a dutiful daughter, and I always try to do well, so that goodness comes my way. I study hard because I know my parents work hard to finance my studies and when I can, I work to ease the costs.
"I have always enjoyed drawing and painting. When I was a child I used to copy drawings in books, and people complemented my skills. They would tell me my copies were as good as the originals. On my part, I would feel happy with the finished piece. I remember being fascinated when I'd watch artists at work, and see their beautiful finished paintings. I knew that's what I wanted to do.
"When I decide on a subject to paint, I first try to find out as much as I can about it. My personal interests influence my themes. I am especially interested in the passing of time, the effect that the present has on tomorrow. That is why I work hard at my work, because it is what I love to do. This is what I can do now -- who knows what will happen tomorrow? I worry that something bad could happen, so I strive for goodness. How else will good things come my way if I don't try?
"My paintings are about life. They are like stories that are lived through time, and I present them in a modern style so that they are easier to understand. Sometimes I start from old objects, some of which I find in my grandmother's house. At times they are covered in rust, which makes the piece even more delicate and capable of disintegration.
"My hopes for the future are to continue doing what I love best, painting. I know my work is not as popular or recognizable as that of an established artist, but I feel happy every time I paint. Moreover, I feel proud whenever somebody admires my work. That is the reason why I decided to contact Novica. I am impressed with Novica, because they give artists the opportunity to promote their work to the world. In addition, I was impressed with the fact that Novica has no set rules as to what an artist can or cannot do. They freely accept artists, whatever their style, and feature art works for diverse tastes – whether you are the creator of such work, or the collector. Novica is like a big library in which you can consult and exchange a variety of viewpoints.
"I would like to say thanks to all art lovers because you appreciate my work and my style. You make me happy and inspire me to continue doing that which I love to do. Please know you have empowered me to carry on with my life's passion every time you see my painting hanging in your home."
