Fredrick Affum hand-crafted instruments and sculptures

"I'm Fredrick Affum, a hardworking and honest person, born in 1963 in Abiriw-Akuapem, in the Eastern Region of Ghana. I traveled to Ivory Coast for construction work, but I returned to Ghana due to my sister's illness, taking over her craft business when she passed away.

"It was a challenging transition because all my resources were spent on her hospital bills. She battled illness for 8 months before her passing. She also left behind a teenage son who fell ill and required hospitalization, tragically passing away as well. Financial struggles were prominent, but my determination opened up numerous opportunities, including travel to Europe. My sister had laid a strong foundation, and my goal is to build upon it by establishing a larger workshop. Currently my three sons work alongside me.

"My inspiration often starts with my imagination, and in the workshop we bring it to life. Our art is crafted from ebony wood, sese wood, mahogany, 100% cotton, and natural dyes. I find great fascination in the final finishing touches. I often travel to villages and remote areas to procure wood and other materials.

"My hope is that one day, my children will take the reins and find success in this craft."
