The Process:
Crafting a wooden cross begins with careful wood selection, where domestic and exotic hardwoods are chosen for their complementary colors, grains, and contrasts to create a visually striking piece. Eighteen individual pieces are then precisely cut and sanded, incorporating 45-degree miter joints for clean corners and a half-lap joint for structural strength where the arms intersect the upright. Next comes the assembly phase, with nine different joints carefully glued and clamped to ensure seamless alignment and durability. After the glue dries, another thorough round of sanding refines all surfaces for smoothness. A router is then used to cut a keyhole slot into the back for easy wall hanging. Finally, the cross receives 3–5 coats of a tung oil/polyurethane blend, which is applied and buffed between coats to enhance the wood’s natural beauty, provide lasting protection, and achieve a rich, hand-rubbed finish.
Dust with a soft dry cloth. Avoid direct sunlight or excessive moisture to preserve the natural finish and avoid wood expansion or contraction.

Robb Blanchette Elroy, Wisconsin | Robb is a retired educator based in rural Wisconsin with a passion for woodworking.

My name is Robb, a former educator who discovered a passion for woodworking after retirement. What began as a personal hobby quickly turned into a personally rewarding venture as friends and relatives started asking me to create pieces for them. I work closely with my wife Kathy, who adds the perfect finishing touches and contributes to design elements that make each piece special. Based in rural Wisconsin, I enjoy crafting items using a variety of beautiful woods. Often these items are one-of-a-kind. I work with domestic hardwoods like oak, cherry, maple, cedar, hickory and walnut, as well as exotic species including olive wood, wenge, padauk, limba, purple heart, and bubinga. I also love incorporating vibrant epoxy resin, blending natural wood grains with striking colors to create unique, functional pieces that are also pleasing to the eye.

After retiring from education, we hit the road as full-time RVers and continued sharing our music through Gospel concerts at RV parks and churches. One winter, Robb began helping in the woodshop at an RV park and started making simple wooden crosses. To our surprise, they sold very well at our merch table after shows. That spark quickly grew into a full passion for woodworking. Robb expanded from crosses to jewelry boxes, plaques, cheese cutters, cutting boards, and eventually began creating beautiful pieces with epoxy resin and fine woods. Kathy has been by his side every step of the way — offering design ideas and expertly applying the finishes that bring each piece to life. What began as a hobby has become our joyful way of creating heartfelt, handcrafted treasures from our hearts to your home.
