Juan Vargas

“Hi, I'm Juan Vargas.

“After facing an economic crisis in Mexico, I had the opportunity to learn glass art and in 1996 to set up a workshop. My brother, who lives in Germany, was engaged in glass art; and when he found out about the catastrophic situation, he offered to teach me, with the aim of helping him produce. By getting involved, I realized that I really liked it and that I had the ability to do it.

“I traveled to Germany to learn. Later, I returned to Mexico to start production. I started making with my own hands, using machines that allowed me to carry out all the work that production implies: polishing, beveling, drilling and etching. In addition, it was very helpful to have some carpentry tools that I had. I hired personnel who had no idea how to work glass; most of them were gardeners or field workers. It was a great start for everyone, because in addition to starting a great production to get ahead, we created jobs.

“Ten months later, we sent the products to Germany for my brother to sell. After that great experience, I started to make my own designs, merge techniques and take the opportunity to create new pieces and develop new ideas that are not common, since in Mexico we have little art in glass. I am very anxious to achieve different pieces, which I do not yet know how to make; but that allows me to create, reinvent myself and be unique in my art.

“The materials we use are crystal, glass, wood, aluminum and enamels; these make up different pieces. Etching a piece is a very special creative process. It is done in a booth with protective equipment and can take up to 4 hours. It is a fascinating challenge, because you must be very focused, not make mistakes and demand perfection from yourself to achieve a great piece. It is for me a very important achievement, though of course some failures that occur during the process to reach perfection. But it is worth it; it gives me fulfillment.

“I want to continue creating great pieces, and making our work known to different parts of the world. I realize how people value our work, and it is an enormous satisfaction when they recognize it; especially in our Mexico, where our compatriots are recognized and feel proud.”
