Marcos Luzalde handcrafted wall mirrors

Jose Marcos Luzalde Rosales was born in 1952. A self-taught artist, he began to work at the age of 17 at a neighbor's workshop. After only a year, Marcos decided to take the plunge and begin working on his own, gradually gaining renown for the beauty and quality of his work.

He is the proud father of five children. Two of his daughters have become his eager students as they follow him down this artistic path. He teaches them everything, from designing a piece to carving and applying the right finish.

To this Andean artisan, his craft is like a hobby. He's been working in wood since 1969 and, to him, it feels like only yesterday when he began. "Woodwork makes me feel good about myself because it means it's a way of preserving an aspect of Peruvian artistry," he confides. Having met and surpassed all the challenges that establishing his own workshop implied, Marcos Luzalde is confident that his work will please you all.

"When I was thirteen, a neighbor taught me the art of gold leaf... to make golden mirrors. I fell in love with this art and it has stayed with me all my life. Eventually I set up my own workshop and I have been able to teach this art to younger workers. I am proud of this - gold leaf has been an important Peruvian art since colonial times and once there were many workshops. Now my workshop is one of the few that produce gold leaf mirrors. To pass this art to the next generation is one of the gifts I have been given."

Good quality carving and finishing from sanding to leaf and laquer application. In the photo it appears that there is no additional color application but on my mirror the curves or dips along the wavy sun rays have a semi transparent brown glaze creating a more defined "shadow" or contrasting depth. The sides are also darker. The effect is well done and makes it more striking from far away, but the photo should be updated on the web site for accuracy. It seems well made and hopefully if treated gently will stand the test of time. It was packaged with care and a good amount of cushioning directly from Peru which I like that it was not in a warehouse and unnecessarily shipped multiple times. The included card from the Andes is a nice touch. This mirror is a good deal and good quality. Support artists not factories! Will go in my massage spa studio. Enjoying it at home first my toddler likes it too!
