About this item

Called ‘Snake Evening Star Protector’ from my Earth Spirits Collection, the inspiration for this piece came from a creation story documentary of indigenous prophecies shared by Jasper Young Bear wisdom keeper of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara nation. The Evening Star is the first star that is visible as the sun sets. Her cosmic spirit has five protectors including snake who is the keeper of the female half of the water cycle. Snake represents healing and water as the primal life force energy. . The piece of cross-cut agate at the top represents a pool of water.

This Snake Evening Star Protector is set into a finely grained section of the centre of the root trunk .Multi-coloured with a mixture of exquisite golds and brown and a curved angle at the top ,which reminds me of a snake’s tail On the stand is a small hand thrown pottery dish. The dish can be used to add your own unique offerings or for incense burning. The healing stone is called Breezy Ocean Swirly. It was found on the shores of Monterey Bay by a local stone collector and polished to this sheen and pattern.

Gaiye's Earth Caretaker Nature Art

The goal for each piece is to remind you that nature is living Earth art that creates new masterpieces every day. In addition, by providing a spiritual anchor to the Earth and a daily reminder of the interconnectedness of all beings on this planet, Earth Caretaker Nature Art is a way to honour your love of the Earth and a place to capture aspects of your personal relationship with the Earth – be this a special leaf you saw in the Fall, your favourite crystal, a stone that called to you on the beach or a bird feather that you found on a hiking trail.

There are three collections that compose my handmade nature art offerings.

My Soul Connections Collection of nature altars are stump pieces of various sizes and thicknesses from 4-6 inches to 10-12 inches in width and approx. 1.5 inches to 2 inches in height. Each piece is designed to represent the four elements earth, fire, air and water in some way and include a small blue or amber tea LED light, a meta-physical stone and a small hand thrown pottery dish. The pottery dish can be used to add your own unique offerings to the altar or for incense burning. Each piece is one of a kind and a rubbed with three coats of urethane. These are designed for a home side table, fireplace hearth or mantle or atop a chest of drawers or bookcase.

My River Stones Collection of nature art includes small (3 to 4 inch high complex pieces of root that are mounted on an 8 to 10 inches high black iron circular or oval stand with hag stones from the Baltic Sea and a polished piece of copper. Gaiye's Earth Caretaker Nature Art Celebrating the Interconnectedness of all of Earth's Beings

Each piece of my nature art are hand shaped from the roots of an ancient 150-year-old Douglas Fir tree that was found in my backyard. The original tree died some 30 years ago and must have stood tall, though lifeless, for quite some time as all of the sap from the tree’s limbs and core collected in its roots. This prevented decay and has made the wood not just heavy, but also beautifully patterned in luminous shades of gold, rich browns almost black and even reds.

A new branch that I have added to my healing journey has been the design and creation of nature art for celebration, reflection and reconnection with the Earth. Each piece of my nature art pieces is hand shaped from the root of an ancient 150-year-old Douglas Fir tree that was found in my backyard.

In the spring of 2026, I shifted my focus and launched a Substack Community (Gaiye’s Earth Caretaker Wisdom). Here I share my life stories, anchored in the philosophy of The Earth Caretaker Way. The Earth Caretaker Way is a ‘way of being’ in this world that gives purposeful voice and action to the environmental and spiritual needs of our planet on a daily basis. Based on a hopeful outlook, this includes helping restore the spiritual balance in our Earth, promoting environmental stewardship and strengthening personal relationships with nature.

Maker Badge Origin Story

My first experience connecting with the earth and nature came when I was just seven months old, when with a child’s eye, I witnessed the building of our family’s cabin on Canoe Lake in Ontario, Canada’s Algonquin Park. Soon my bushel basket baby carriage gave way to a canoe, and I spent every summer paddling on Algonquin lakes and hiking its portages whilst exploring its every facet including the mysterious drowning of artist Tom Thomson in 1917.

Maker Badge Key Milestones

In addition, to having written a dozen books on the human history of Ontario Canada’s Algonquin Park in 2020 I launched a podcast (Algonquin Defining Moments) that shares 20 years of stories that I have collected about the park’s origins, pioneers and its changing environment.

Maker Badge Powerful Journey

I am an Earth Caretaker, driven by a mission to proactively advocate for the Earth and support her in her needed healing journey. For years I have been repurposing and refinishing old wood into side tables, bookcases, window moldings, doors and decks. All this changed in 2023 when I discovered and dug up a 150-year-old Douglas Fir root and stump in my back yard. This jump-started an interest in sculpting the different shapes and sizes of roots into nature art and nature altars.
