Gus Anom

“I was born in Mas, a small village in Gianyar, Bali. I am the youngest child of three. I am married to a beautiful woman, and we have a daughter and a son. Being a parent is amazing to me; it has changed me a lot.

“My parents worked in a hotel, but they did not push me to follow in their footsteps; instead giving me the freedom to choose what kind of job I wanted. Mas is small, but full of arts. Many art forms can be found here, such as stone carving, wood carving, and even traditional dance. Ever since I was a boy, I was familiar with traditions and customs that deal with the arts.

“At first I was interested in carving, but later in school I fell in love with painting. Aside from just being my hobby, it has become my profession. I love painting because it allows me to free my ideas and put them on canvas.

“As an artist, life has not always been smooth. Despite this, I have always been able to overcome the situation in order to keep painting. Once, there was a time when payment for one of my paintings did not arrive on time, and I needed the money to pay someone else. I was worried at first, but then the moment passed. One thing that I always keep in mind is that the wheel of life keeps turning. No sorrow will last forever. There are also moments that make me really proud to be a painter, namely when my work is enjoyed by other people.

“All of my paintings are good and challenging. To create a painting, I take my feelings and put them on canvas. I never have any trouble coming up with ideas. What inspires me the most is my neighborhood. Since I was young, my painting style has grown, influenced by culture. My paintings also express my feelings about our customs and traditions.

“I have received some awards for my works, such as the ‘KAMASRA PRIZE S+S1 DENPASAR 1998’ and the ‘PHILIP MORRIS INDONESIA ART VI 1999.’

“I hope Novica can help me introduce my paintings to the world.”
