Called 'Running Tree' from my Earth Spirits Collection, Imy inspiration for this piece came from two of the root structures that to me look like arms, two others that look like legs and a third long, body-like section. The color tones, visual textures, shapes, swirls and patterns that emerged on every side are exquisite. The healing stone is a polished Apatite that stimulates creativity and clairvoyance, encourages accumulation of knowledge, balances energy.. It has also been known to enable access to past life insights and telepathy. The piece is mounted on a large 12" in diameter heavy vintage cast iron lamp stand that is 5" high and has been lacquered black.

This unique one-of-a-kind nature altar has been hand sanded and shaped from a vintage 150-year-old
sap-soaked Douglas Fir tree root. It was then rubbed with at least three coats of Danish oil in order to bring out the wood’s unique textures
colors and sap formations. This large and very heavy tree root piece likely came from the core of the root ball given the number of external root structures. Ii has ribbons of light and dark sap formations along with multi-textured root patterns that have been shaped to smooth flowing lines with many colored swirls and patterns. The wood dimensions are 31” high
19” deep and 31” wide at its widest point. When mounted on the stand the total height is 36" high.
Location Suggestions: Because of its size, this piece needs a stand-alone corner in a living room, hallway or office. The location should be one where it can be a daily reminder of the interconnectedness of all things and a spiritual anchor to the Earth. It can also be housed outside in a shaded spot, though I cannot guarantee that the finish will last for any length of time and will need re-oiling from time to time if left outside.

There are three collections that compose my handmade nature art offerings.

My Soul Connections Collection of nature altars are stump pieces of various sizes and thicknesses from 4-6 inches to 10-12 inches in width and approx. 1.5 inches to 2 inches in height. Each piece is designed to represent the four elements earth, fire, air and water in some way and include a small blue or amber tea LED light, a meta-physical stone and a small hand thrown pottery dish. The pottery dish can be used to add your own unique offerings to the altar or for incense burning. Each piece is one of a kind and a rubbed with three coats of urethane. These are designed for a home side table, fireplace hearth or mantle or atop a chest of drawers or bookcase.

My River Stones Collection of nature art includes small (3 to 4 inch high complex pieces of root that are mounted on an 8 to 10 inches high black iron circular or oval stand with hag stones from the Baltic Sea and a polished piece of copper. Each piece of vintage tree root is one of a kind and a rubbed with three coats of urethane. The hag stones have natural holes in them formed either by running water or organisms that bore into them and are most often found on ocean beaches. They are considered to be powerful protective talismans representing the continuous and transformative power of flowing water. Copper is a powerful energy conductor that speaks of balance, spiritual growth and the smoothing of rough edges necessary for enabling change.

Most are between 12 and 18” tall, though a few are made from larger, heavier and more complex root systems and can weigh as much as 20 pounds. Each piece of my nature art are hand shaped from the roots of an ancient 150-year-old Douglas Fir tree that was found in my backyard. The original tree died some 30 years ago and must have stood tall, though lifeless, for quite some time as all of the sap from the tree’s limbs and core collected in its roots. This prevented decay and has made the wood not just heavy, but also beautifully patterned in luminous shades of gold, rich browns almost black and even reds.

My first experience connecting with the earth and nature came when I was just seven months old, when with a child’s eye, I witnessed the building of our family’s cabin on Canoe Lake in Ontario, Canada’s Algonquin Park. Soon my bushel basket baby carriage gave way to a canoe, and I spent every summer paddling on Algonquin lakes and hiking its portages whilst exploring its every facet including the mysterious drowning of artist Tom Thomson in 1917.
