"The Orozco family of artisans in Mexico hand-crafts and hand-paints this Day of the Dead-themed jewelry box entirely from recycled cardboard with a papier mache technique. "We're Betsabé Orozco, Edith Orozco and our mother, Delfina Segoviano de Orozco. For the past twenty years, we have created figures and sculptures in papier maché. Thanks to our mother, we learned the craft as children. In addition, she instilled a love for art, culture and Mexican tradition in both of us. She studied fine arts and we majored in graphic design; together we apply our knowledge and sensitivity to developing new styles in papier maché.
"All of our pieces show the distinctive roots and colors of our country, of which we are very proud." Betsabé and Delfina design objects related to Mexican tradition and Edith creates pieces immersed the world of dreams and of the sea.
"We begin by modeling the figure in clay, from which we make a plaster mold in two, three or more parts, depending on the complexity of the design. We then cover the parts of the mold with recycled paper and engrudo – a mixture of flour, water and white carpenter's glue. When the paper dries, we slip it off the mold and join the parts to complete the figure. We sand the piece and apply a substance that protects it from humidity. The figure is then ready to paint.
"Because we create our works with quality and put our hearts into them, we have been able to take them across our borders to countries like the United States, Canada, England and Spain."
