"Artisan Hilmy Arifin presents this beautiful hand cut and stitched leather tote bag which she calls Ayu Ageng in honor of her Indonesian roots. Ayu is a traditional Balinese female name, further referenced by the classically feminine colors of pastel pink for the bag's exterior and dusty rose for the interior. Ageng signifies 'large' which this roomy purse certainly is, with enough space for a datebook, makeup case and even a tablet or laptop. Lined with polyester suede, the interior features a convenient zippered pocket. A cute matching tassel and straps in contrasting deep brown further accent this stylish tote."

"I was born in Central Java in an area known for its batik art. This now inspires my designs. I'm the fifth of eleven children and I like traveling, swimming and making new things.
"After graduating from the university in Jogjakarta, I worked as a lecturer and teacher until 2010. My husband is a leather entrepreneur and also teaches classes in leather technology. Today, I work in leather as well.
"I use only the best leather and my designs are more classic style in style. In addition to my handbags, I recently began developing leather jewelry, which makes use of the scraps so nothing is wasted.
"In my workshop, I am assisted by four artisans, some of whom have disabilities. I also give work to mothers who live nearby. We prepare and tan the leather ourselves.
"We went through a very difficult moment when my husband resigned from a job and we had to go back and start from zero. Thank God, we got through these problems.
"he moment that really make me feel so peace and tranquil is when I pray. We have one daughter who makes us really happy. She makes my day and has made me more responsible for everything in life, especially for her future."
In 2018, Hilmy received the Sleman Innovative Craft Award (SICA) organized by Sleman District.
