We are Akoma of West Africa. Akoma means 'heart' in the Akan language and is symbolized by a heart in the Adinkra symbols of our rich heritage. As our name suggests, we are a group of carvers who have teamed up to showcase Africa's rich culture through our works.
The quest to promote unity in the African continent is what led us to come together. We all have different cultural backgrounds and experiences.
What links us is that we all grew up in communities where carving was and is a major profession. Our parents happen to be carvers as well, which gave us firsthand training in this profession. Through observation and constant practice in assisting our parents, we developed the desire for this work.
We also accompanied our parents to organized exhibitions and it was at such shows that members of this group met and became friends. Later on in life, we agreed to join our forces together and create art works that will project the image of West Africa to the whole world.
The mind can change on a particular subject but, when the heart decides on that same subject, it is established.
Our hearts have decided to follow this course and our desire is to make an impact.
