I'm a Costa Rican textile artist. My passion for textiles was born when I signed up for some free classes at the university. I needed something to do in my spare time because, after my youngest son was born, my income as a cook just wasn't enough. I'd always wanted to do something creative so I took courses in sewing, drawing, color theory and design. In this way, I gained experience but the greatest help came from the hours I spent in the workshop. I spent more than ten years developing my own techniques and improving my skills. There is so much about this work that I love. Each design lets me tell a story. I enjoy creating a connection with shoppers who can understand that what I do is unique and authentic. This has been a great challenge both as a person and as a professional woman. I'm a survivor of abuse but life has taught me to defend my ideals and not be frightened by unjust situations. For this, my immense love for my children helped me in every way. They are the best there is in my life, my greatest strength and blessing. As an artisan, my greatest achievement has been to create a solid identity and consistency in my work so that each design can be recognized as mine. With my whole heart, I want to pass this art onto my children so that they will continue it. My dream is to be successful in my work and demonstrate that a person can live with dignity from his or her art. I want to offer employment to my women who are the main wage earners in their families. I know that we can give our families a better life, build our own homes and have more opportunities for growth. Gaby Prado's loved ones describe her as an artisan who strives to constantly better her technique, a valiant and authentic woman who looks at life with hope, a loving mother who is teaching her children the value of work.
