"Yuni Kristina selects the regal parang seno kecil motif for this stylish silk scarf. Parang (dagger or blade), referred to Javanese sultans and was once reserved for the royal courts of Surakarta and Jogyakarta. Kristina works in batik, stamping the green motifs by hand."
"I'm Yuni Kristina and I was born in 1983 in Pekalongan, Central Java. As part of Pekalongan regency, Wonokerto is known as the 'World's City of Batik;' people here also create batik. Most homemakers in my town make batik, from small productions to large ones. There are stamped batiks and hand-painted batiks — all are available. Besides being known as Batik City, Pekalongan is also known as the 'Fisherman City.' Most of the men work as fishermen. My father also was a fisherman and my mother was a batik maker. As a fisherman, my father could be gone anywhere from a month to six months. It all depended on how much fish he could catch.
"I started working in this field when I was 16 years old. After school, I helped my mother in making batik. She taught me how to hold the canting tool, and how to draw on cotton or silk. I love making batik because it has so many motifs that can be explored. To make batik, one also needs patience and extraordinary skill.
"Even though now my life seems good and I can provide for my children, I used to work very hard when I was a teenager. When I graduated from senior high school, I had to work in two places. From 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., I worked for a phone seller and after that, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m., I worked at a motorcycle counter in a shopping mall. I did that for six years because I needed to support my father, since he was very sick at that time.
"Now, I am married to my lovely husband, Pande Putu Riecky Surya, and together, we are blessed with a daughter and two sons. Our children are the best thing that ever happened to me. And they give us new spirit to work harder. My husband and I always give our best to give them a great education, so they can have a bright future. We hope that they will be humble people, and they can make a good impact on society.
"When I had just started my batik workshop, a lot of people underestimated my skill. Yet, by the time I could prove they were wrong, people started to recognize my designs. I have made a lot of batik scarves and shawls, but my best and most challenging one is the ‘Wine Garden' shawl. The reason is because it uses two methods to make it beautiful. First, I do batik on silk, and then I draw flowers so the product is really colorful. The silk and cotton in my scarves are usually ones that I have picked. Then I give them to my helpers — I have 20 helpers, six men and fourteen women. My husband and I coordinate everything. I'm really proud to be a batik maker because I am also preserving my heritage, especially now that batik is recognized as original to Indonesia.
"I joined you in 2006. It was my husband who brought our batik to you and, thankfully, you accepted us and even helped us a lot. You've taught me to be really careful in making sure of the quality of my scarves and shawls. You've also taught me to be creative, as you request new designs regularly. And we received a Novica microcredit at zero percent interest so I could expand my workshop. I've worked very hard and today, I own a house and two shops to sell my batik scarves. I even have a car and a motorcycle, and now I can support my children with the best education."
Original Artisan Story
"I learned the art of batik when I was very young, since my mother is a batik artist in Java. She has been making batik at home for 23 years, while waiting each day for my father – a fisherman – to come home from the sea. As you can imagine, batik is a part of my life. I started experimenting with the technique when I was 13 years old, with more textiles. Now I've learned to create different motifs and to work with other materials, such as silk. My mother still helps me a lot.
"My mother is my inspiration. She and I still design together, especially the floral and bird motifs that are typical in Pekalongan batik. My husband Rieckey also helps me a lot because he knows what people like abroad, and then I can focus on creating. I would like the batik of Bali to become well known around the world, since its beauty is outstanding."
Thank you so much, Yuni, for this gorgeous piece of wearable art! The colors are stunning and the weight of the scarf is perfect for year-round wear. This piece is delicate, hangs beautifully, and finishes an outfit (casual or more formal). This is something I will keep forever.
These charming artworks are a quick last minute dress up accessory to change casual to dress-casual. An important wardrobe item for the busy lady on-the-go.
Wrap up in a light shawl to protect yourself against too much sun, wind or a cool evening. Versatility is a watchword for shawl use. You can even use it to shade your baby from the world.
Subtle design elegance unobtrusively lifts the feel of your minimal needs wardrobe into a feeling of security with a versatile shawl for a little extra protection from the weather or from prying eyes.
This shawl arrived and I was astonished by how soft it is. The pattern is beautiful and distinctive and I get compliments whenever I wear it. Recommended!
I love it all. Love the size & the texture of the silk (some feel heavier & too silky for me) and I love the color. It is hard to get that kind of pattern & bright Colors
Beautifully made. 100% silk! Fantastic size and very versatile. Kept me cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. I received many compliments. Thank you Yuni Kristina.
Ms. Yuni Kristina's scarves are so beautifully crafted! I own her blue version of this scarf and love it so much I bought this one for my sister. She said it's beautiful and loves it! I highly recommend Ms. Yuni Kristina's scarves.
I thought of my dilaw the first time I saw it. It was not available then, but you notified me when it became available again. My daughter in law is thrilled with it!
This scarf is absolutely gorgeous. The moment it arrived I was so happy with my purchase. Simple, elegant & classic. The colors are even brighter & more beautiful in person!!
It is thinner than i thought it would be but still not to thin to be fragile (for people like me anyway, who tend to get fragile materials damaged no matter how much we try to look after them) and it's nice on a cool summer evening or over a jumper in winter (not that i have had any such weather to try it yet). I love brown but wanted some colour as well, that was not to bright so while brown loo... read more
This is my go to gift! It's colors are gorgeous. It's lightweight and can be worn as a scarf or a shawl. The colors enhance every complexion and it can be dresses up or with a tee shirt for casual wear. I've given several as gifts and the recipients wear them all the time!
My friend loves scarves and has quite a collection. But she has worn this many times already so I know she really likes it. And I have heard her receive many compliments!
This lightweight shawl is wide enough and long enough that it can be wrapped around my shoulders over a summer dress when the temperature (whether indoors or out) suddenly drops, and it keeps me warm.I also wear it, draped in many different ways, with dresses year-round. It is long enough to hide middle-age bulges! The colors seem to go with almost everything I wear.
This beautiful shawl "Java Sea" is a treat. The colors and design are so pleasing and the silk is very soft and drapes well. This became an instant favorite. I'm ordering a second one for my dear friend for her birthday.
This shawl is perfect to enhance the looks of simple dress. Goes very well with black, navy or most dark colored clothing. I have not washed it since I wore it only once so far. I hope I won't have to dry clean it and the silk will last long even if I hand wash.
This was purchased for a gift and it is truly beautiful and very well made. It drapes wonderfully and was most appreciated by my daughter, who also appreciates that it is fair trade!
This shawl has garnered compliments everytime I wear it! I love the feel of it and the pattern is as beautiful as the photo shows. I bought one for my friend and she bought one for me!Love it.
I've used this shawl as a wrap for theater outings, dinner dates and other times I wanted something prettier than a sweater or jacket. It always gets compliments. The colors are so vibrant and the pattern is striking. It's soft and big enough to be a cozy accessory, not just a beautiful one! I plan to purchase another one as a gift.
This scarf is just the thing to wrap around bare shoulders on a summer evening, or to wind around my neck inside my coat on a chilly day. It's light as air and so thin I can carry it in a coat pocket without even creating a bulge?and yet it does add a touch of warmth when I need it. The design is lovely and well executed. I could not be more pleased with this purchase.
This absolutely gorgeous shawl is made from some of the finest silk I've ever had the privilege to touch. It is so soft and light, yet sturdy and the batikking is impeccable! I love the black version, as it shows up the print so beautifully! It almost has a vintage Arts and Crafts feel to the pattern. Nice enough to display in one's home - the bedroom perhaps...? I have since thought of gettin... read more
My shawl just arrived and I am blown away. So stunning, light, wispy and the colors are beautiful. Living in a somewhat tropical climate, it's light weight and perfect for adding a touch of color. Happy Anniversary present from my husband!
This is a beautiful silk shawl that is my one of favorites. The colors and design are gorgeous. I've worn it several times and it still looks like the day I received it.
Beautifully done! Nice and lightweight lovely spring colors. Looks great with any outfit . Good representation of the colors in the picture so you get what you ordered and not something different. Enjoy the little card and picture. Cute bag for packaging too! Appreciate items that are unique and not made here and you won't see it on someone going down the street.
Wanted to give my wife something special to wear as a thank you gift. She has put this beautiful light silk scarf around her neck a couple of times already and she loves it. Thank you for providing me a place to find wonderful hand-made gifts that are always appreciated.
My mother was pleased to receive this scarf as a gift for Christmas. She was impressed with the artist's talent and loved the beautiful colours. She loves the scarf and has worn it many times since she got it in the mail.
I wore this recently to the theater and received so many compliments. The rich color, lightweight silk and beautiful design makes you feel like a princess ~ I love it!
This shawl is so breathtaking that I want to wear it every day...and sometimes try to find a way to do just that. I love it...thank you for your beautiful work!
I cant believe how fast it arrived and how beautiful it is. I also appreciated the handwritten postcard. It makes me want to visit Bali! Mahalo nui loa from the island of Hawaii!
Goes with denim, black, Grey, white, turquoise, teal and navy. large, but with great drape so that you can tie it in any way. always get asked about it.
I love batik, this scarf is a lovely way to dress up a casual outfit. My daily work is spent in a pair of scrubs. I don't have many "dress-up occassions" but I like to add some loveliness to my favorite jeans and sweater.
I am so sorry for the late feedback! This scarf is absolutely beautiful. The colors and the feel are amazing. I gave it to a friend as a Christmas present and she just loved it. Thank you so much!
Beautiful pattern and wonderful royal blue colour. This scarf is just all I wanted. As all the scarves I bought from Yuni Kristina, it's well made and elegant. Although it will look great paired with a jean or leather jacket. Really, just perfect. Thanks again Yuni Kristina!
This scarf is gorgeous! The blue shimmers and is vibrant--a true royal blue color. The batik pattern is lovely. the scarf is also very light weight so it can be tucked in a pocket or purse for cool summer evenings. Excellent craftsmanship.
I was looking for something unique to give to my bridesmaids for a destination wedding in Asia. These scarves were perfect- beautiful, useful, and a nice reminder of the event. Thanks!
This colorful shawl is not overpowering with color, but can coordinate with most things I own. It's light as a feather...yet is warming. I'm so very glad to own it. Thank you
I just received my two scarves - Harmony and Jade Jasmine. They are beautiful! And so unique. I'm really happy with both of them and I bet I'll be getting a lot of compliments on them. I'll be recommending your store for sure. And I'll be coming back myself for more scarves!Thank you so much Yuni Kristina!
My daughter was astonished! The silk is weightless and with a classical pattern the scarf will last forever. It was a gift before a long journey. The scarf will accompany her wherever she will go. Thank you so much, Kristina!
This shawl is beautifully designed and has rich colors and detail. The silk fabric feels wonderful! It is perfect for me and now I'm planning on collecting more of this talented artist's designs!
The silk is of good quality. The brown colour has actually a very very slight "khaki" touch to it, but still very beautiful. The beige instead is exactly as depicted. This scarf is very elegant. Also I would like to add that I liked many many other scarves from this same artist, Mrs. Yuni Kristina, it was really difficult to make a choice ! Congratulations for these wonderful scarves !
This was a gift for my sister and I loved it so much I wound up keeping it and giving her something else! Rich, vibrant colors. Have received many compliments when I've worn it.
Airy, beautiful, timeless. Perfect for summer. Classic. Super long and airy, perfect to dress up a t-shirt or really look elegant with a nicer dress and some jewelry. It is delicate and so be mindful of snagging on jewelry, etc. Beautiful. Love it.
Absolutely beautiful. It was gorgeous with my blue dress for the wedding. I have worn it many times since then. I always get compliments! The workmanship is first rate.
Wonderful workmanship. The colors are exactly like in the picture. Some scarves are too long, and this one drapes just right for me (I am 5 feet 4). It is also light enough so that it can be worn on a summer evening in an air conditioned place. The batik brings back happy memories of Indonesia, where I grew up. Terima kasih, Yuni Kristina!
When I received this beautiful silk scarf, I felt like keeping it for myself. It is such a beautiful scarf and made by hand. I myself do crocheting and other needle work. The work that went in to this and the design is just the most gorgeous scarf I have ever seen.
The shawl is exquisite and so beautifully made. The colours are stunning and are more defined than the photograph. I loved Yuni's story and how she designs with her Mum. I used to sew and do crafts with my Mum and I matched our stories. I have bought this to remember my Mother so will treasure this shawl. Thank you Yuni. I am very happy
Our 12th wedding anniversary -- pearls and siilk. This was perfect and looks beautiful on my wife. Thank you for such an elegant and graceful creation.
I ordered this to wear to my son's wedding so you can imagine that I am being super picky. I received it yesterday and I'm thrilled! The colors are rich, the fabric light and soft, the craftsmanship is excellent. Thank you to the artisans who are making these scarves/shawls. I will think of you when I wear this.
This shawl is beautiful. It arrived beautifully folded, in a lovely gift pouch. This is a gift, which I'm sure my mother will love! I should have ordered 2!
I just received this beautiful scarf in the mail and couldn't be happier, it's so beautiful and airy and the colors in this scarf will go with so many things, I just love it!
Lovely presentation in drawstring bag. Beautifully made/designed, quality feel, vivid colors, airy and light. Bought for myself...but would be a welcome gift!! Kudos to the artist!
Beautiful colorful scarf with a hint of a sheen or shininess to the threads. I have to admit however that it is rather short (53 inches) and I wish it were a little longer. I've noticed other scarves on this website are 57", 79" and even 89" long. Regardless of length, I will keep it and enjoy wearing it! Thank you!
Not often do you shop online with results like this.My artistic treasure is absolutely beautiful...exactly as shown. I'm traveling to India and wanted a lightweight, colorful coverup. This "garden of colors" is perfect. Well made and delightfully packaged. Kudos to the artist.
Absolutely beautiful. This is the 2nd shawl I've ordered from this artist. Great detail and colors. Beautiful. At the moment, I've lost my hair to chemo and using them as my head gear. They are long so I can wrap them many ways. When my hair grows back out, I will continue wearing them as shawls.
Beautiful scarf! The colors are so harmonious and vivid. I wanted a spring scarf to wear with my khaki and neutral colored clothes and this one is perfect in every way. Thank you to the wonderfully talented artist, Uni.
I've had this shawl for several years and it's still just as beautiful as when I got it - light, airy, dresses up a simple outfit, feels sophisticated with a work outfit.
Excellent craftsmanship! Beautiful design! Elegant! It is just what I wanted, my new favourite wrap! Well packaged and didn't take too long to arrive :)Thank you!
This is a beautiful silk scarf that came in its own cotton draw string bag which makes it a complete gift. I am very happy with this purchase and wish the artisan all the best.Thank you (Terima Kasih) - copied from the card, I hope I got it right!
This is a great shawl, nice and light for summer use when you just need a little something over your shoulders. The workmanship is of good quality also. I'm getting a nice collection of shawls and scarfs and thanks to Novice can shop around the world.
Simply elegant! The perfect gift. An addition to everything. Delicate silk with lovely colors. Good taste & touche. I heartily recommend.
