Ahmed Baba Osmanu

Ahmed Baba Osmanu hand-carved figurines and jewelry boxes

"I was born on March 20, 1960. After completing my elementary education in 1975, I joined my late uncle, Alhaji Adamu Osmanu, and started trading in handicrafts. My uncle obtained the arts and craft pieces and my cousins and I sold them. Through this exercise, I learned to polish brass and even used a chisel to refine carvings before displaying them for sale.

"After this, I became a self-taught woodcarver. My creations are basically both decorative and utilitarian. My materials come from our environment, and I use various types of wood and plate to form different designs.

"In 1986, I was able to craft and sell my designs in the Accra Arts Centre. In 1992, I registered with Ghana Export Promotion Council and feel proud to have shown my designs in Germany, the U.S.A, South Africa and Namibia."
