Raul Huacarpuma
"My name is Raul Huacarpuma and I was born in Paruro, Cusco, in 1976, and it's where my creative journey began. I'm the kind of person who turns threads and fabrics into art infused with history and passion. My life story is a testament to my unshakable devotion to craftsmanship. My roots are deeply connected to Espinar, Cusco, where my parents decided to return with us, driven by a need for belonging and recognition. Growing up in the midst of these mountains and valleys nurtured my love for artisanal creation.
"Together with my brother Abel, we embarked on a journey back to Paruro in search of opportunities and a future deeply rooted in the land itself. Agricultural work forged a strong bond with nature, instilling values of tenacity and gratitude that would shape my artistic journey.
"Fate briefly separated us when Abel sought new horizons in the city of Cusco. Determined to follow in his footsteps, I embraced the world of textiles. Hand-operated knitting machines presented a challenge, but with every stitch, I inched closer to mastery. My brother's words, "Raul, focus," became my mantra, guiding me through the toughest moments.
"Textile workshops provided a mixed bag of experiences: triumphs and challenges that molded my determination. Even during financial difficulties and journeys between Cusco and Puno, my passion for craftsmanship remained unshaken, propelling me forward.
"Today, I hold a bold dream close to my heart. I aspire to establish my own brand and take my creations beyond borders. I want to share my heritage and empower women and mothers through art, impacting the lives of future generations. I hope to provide them with opportunities for basic and professional education, just as my daughters have done. They've woven their professional destinies into our family tradition, creating an intergenerational legacy that fills me with pride.
"From the fields of Paruro to my early attempts at perfecting knitting machines with my creative touch, these memories remain vivid. I see myself as a symbol of perseverance and a deep love for craftsmanship. My life tells a story of growth, learning, and a profound appreciation for a heritage that defies the passage of time. Every stitch and every piece I create is a testament to my journey, a tribute to the past, and a bridge to a vibrant, possibility-filled future."
