In 1990 Akwele graduated from the Ghana Institute of Journalism in and though she worked in this field for three years she realized that that art, for her, is not just an idea and that she needed to heed her natural interest in artistic endeavors. Full of determination, she studied art in the studios of acclaimed artist Chris Charway (Ghana), Kossi Assou (Togo) and, Werner Register (Germany).
From these experiences she developed her trademark style which includes her choice of materials, concept and techniques that allow her audience to see beyond her physical works. Akwele has also distinguished herself in ethnic jewelry design for over a decade.
Her work with mixed media has made art lovers admire her flair and profound perception, which are rooted in her strong faith in God. Akwele's work is a continuous process of experimentation, research and development, and this has earned her a number of awards nationally and internationally for both her paintings and jewelry collections.
Akwele is a member of numerous professional bodies and has held offices in some of them, including Executive Director of Art in Aktion; Executive Director, Women Arts Institute, Africa, and more. Akwele has to her credit five solo shows, two woman shows, and more than 40 group shows both in Ghana and abroad since 1999. In addition she has participated in a number of International workshops and conferences.
"One can never finish discovering what nature has to offer, so from a place of the spirit and with joy, gratitude, and delight I am going deep and deeper with my works in order to share with the world," exclaims Akwele.
