Coral Conundrum: Dead or Alive upcycled fiber art recalls coral reefs & their inhabitants. We need to protect these crucial ecosystems from climate change & pollution threats or we lose them. As reefs deteriorate, they lose their vibrant color & their ability to provide nutrients & shelter to thousands of marine species. In this upcycled fiber art piece, the gradation from color to monochrome represents the bleaching that occurs as coral dies. Coral reefs are being threatened globally. The biggest threat comes from humans who are responsible for all the significant problems affecting the coral – climate change, unsustainable fishing & land-based pollution. So how we successfully address this problem is the conundrum, but publicly recognizing it on a mass scale is the first step. I use my artistic voice as a platform for speaking to current issues while creating beautiful art. And I reduce my environmental impact by using eco-friendly yarns & upcycling samples & remnants. In Coral Conundrum: Dead or Alive, I upcycled remnant warp yarns for the coral clusters & also created handmade paper.
