"Birds and the grasslands always go hand in hand in Horacio Esquivel's art. This striking composition is not an exception as it depicts an exotic bird in the most vibrant shade of red on green grasslands with a stroke of yellow for yet another impressive contrast accent. The scene is crafted by the Mexican artist using acrylic paints and natural dyes on Fabriano paper.

"I was born in Jerez, Zacatecas. I'm a lawyer by profession but my hobbies are painting and photography. In fact, I began exploring these media when I was 15. I had personal contact with many painters and works of art in the galleries I visited. They were my inspiration.
"I studied photography and fine art, where I first worked in an abstract style, with textiles and collages. Today all my work is abstract.
"I've also done many paintings for the Sacred Art Museum of the Zacatecas Cathedral as well as other churches in the state. For these, I use traditional restauration techniques with oxidized textures, and gold and silver leaf.
"I love researching cave paintings, oxide color and textures in both antique and contemporary art.
"I like to use cochineal pigment in my paintings. I can combine it and it yields a great variety of colors that you can see in my art.
"I'm the founder of an art academy in Zacatecas where I promote courses and workshops on painting and art.
"As an artist, I'd define myself as 'still learning.' My greatest success is my family."
